²Definition of Expanded Polystyrene:

Expanded polystyrene, also known as expandable polystyrene (EPS), offers advantages such as low relative density (1.05g/cm³), low thermal conductivity, minimal water absorption, resistance to impact and vibration, thermal insulation, sound insulation, moisture resistance, vibration damping, and excellent dielectric properties. It is widely used as shock-absorbing packaging material for machinery, instruments, household appliances, crafts, and other fragile or valuable products, as well as for fast food packaging. With the rapid development of the global economy, the amount of waste polystyrene foam is increasing daily. This waste expanded polystyrene foam is lightweight, bulky, and resistant to aging and corrosion, making it a major challenge in waste management. In recent years, the recycling and reuse of expanded polystyrene has become one of the most pressing issues in the industry.

²EPS CE Certification – Applicable Product Directives and Harmonized Standards

A. Product Directive: Construction Product Regulation (CPR) 305/2011/EU

B. European Harmonized Standard:

EN 14309 Thermal insulation products for building equipment and industrial installations - Factory made products of expanded polystyrene (EPS) - Specification;

²According to EN 14309, the following test items are required for EPS CE certification:

Reaction to Fire Test: Evaluates the burning characteristics of the product in the event of a fire. This test ensures that the insulation material meets relevant fire safety requirements in construction applications, reducing fire risks and protecting lives and property. (Mandatory item)

Thermal Conductivity Test: Assesses the thermal insulation performance of the product, i.e., how easily heat passes through the material. A lower thermal conductivity indicates better insulation, effectively reducing heat transfer, lowering energy consumption, and improving the energy efficiency of buildings.

Compressive Strength Test: Measures the load-bearing capacity and deformation of the product under compressive forces. Sufficient compressive strength ensures that the insulation material can withstand external pressures, such as building weight and wind loads, without excessive deformation or damage.

Flexural Strength Test: Evaluates the strength and toughness of the product under bending forces. Flexural strength is particularly important for insulation materials or components used in bending conditions, reflecting the material's ability to resist deformation and failure.

Shear Strength Test: Determines the product's resistance to shear forces. This test helps assess the stability and reliability of the insulation material under various stress conditions, especially in insulation systems where different material layers interact or connect.

Water Vapor Transmission Rate Test: Measures the product's permeability to water vapor. A low water vapor transmission rate prevents moisture from entering the insulation layer, avoiding issues such as reduced insulation performance and material corrosion due to moisture accumulation, thereby ensuring the long-term effectiveness of the insulation system.

EN 14309 certification is a key pass for products entering the European market. In the EU construction market, building insulation materials are strictly regulated. Products without EN 14309 certification cannot be legally sold or used in EU countries. This certification acts as an "admission ticket" for products in the EU construction insulation sector, laying the foundation for expanding into the broad European market.
